Maths Coach Scotland is an online chat service aiming to provide help with questions in mathematics. You chat with maths coaches to get advice and tips on how to tackle and solve your maths problems. Maths coaches are undergraduate mathematics students at the University of Edinburgh trained in online coaching. Maths Coaches have access to materials used in schools, so can easily help with your questions.
Maths Coach Scotland is part of a research project at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), in Sweden, in collaboration with The University of Edinburgh and Smartera AB. Each chat session is stored and may be used for statistical data analysis, as feedback for coaches, and to help teachers improve student learning through pedagogical research. The details you give when you sign in to chat to a coach, the location indicated by your IP address, and the chat session itself, will be stored and may be analysed. We strongly recommend that you use an alias (a fake name) rather than your real name to sign in the Maths Coach Scotland as this reduces the personal data you are sharing, which is best practice.
If you give personal details within the chat itself, they will be removed from the chat or, if personal details are written on the whiteboard, the entire chat will be deleted. By clicking on “I accept the terms – start chat!”, you and your parent or carer agree to this use of your data in this research project. If you do not accept the terms and conditions, then you should not participate in a chat session. Your data will only be handled by KTH, Smartera AB and The University of Edinburgh.
The UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) gives you the right to find out what information organisations store about you. By accepting these terms and conditions, you have the legal right to obtain a copy of the information we hold about you on request. By clicking on “I accept the terms – start chat!” you and your parent or carer agree that KTH, Smartera AB and the University of Edinburgh will handle your details in compliance with the above.Maths Coach Scotland uses cookies to improve your experience of our web site.
